Released in 2017 on Southern Lord Records
Recorded & mixed by Radwan Moumneh at Hotel2Tango
Featuring Jessica Moss on violin and Thierry Amar on upright bass
This sludgy, drone metal trio first blew my mind when I saw them open for Sunn O))) a couple years ago and continue to impress. On their latest release, heavy, feedback-laden guitars swarm around the throaty singing and impassioned yelps of vocalist/guitarist Robin Wattie. Her unique and dynamic vocals have few reference points, but most closely recall a teenage Björk singing in punk bands in the 80s. The drums on the album are inconstant and sparse, but in the cathartic moments when they are present, they are slow, deliberate, and pounding. Seeing as BB is from Montreal, it’s not a surprise that they work with local Constellation veterans on their recordings. While their last album was produced by Efrim Menuck (Godspeed You!, Black Emperor, Silver Mt. Zion), this one was recorded & mixed by Radwan Moumneh (Jerusalem in My Heart) at the mighty Hotel2Tango, where dark, murky, heavily-reverbed, analogue production is a specialty. What really sets this album apart from their last album, Au De La, is the inclusion of chamber instruments during key moments, provided by violinist Jessica Moss (Silver Mt. Zion, Black Ox Orkestar) and upright bassist Thierry Amar (Silver Mt. Zion, GY!BE, Black Ox Orkestar).
