When Moor Mother declares “free jazz as a liberation technology”, she seems to be referring to music’s magical ability to be a sonic repository for ideas, feelings, histories, spells, energies, visions & potentialities. In the mainstream, these possibilities and information that challenge the narrative of neoliberalism are suppressed, so music, art, books and films become some of the only containers for this information to exist, until a time when these revolutionary energies are able to blossom in material dimensions. If art didn’t possess this power, Capital wouldn’t focus so much energy on controlling a narrative; fascist movements wouldn’t be motivated to burn or ban books or other revolutionary media.
As a means of further exploring this concept of music as a liberation technology, this brooding mix channels vital information & powerful energies found within the sonic codes of these records. The gritty electronics, de-constructed experimentation and post-industrial beats that lie within create an atmosphere that sonically reflects the dystopian realities of our times, while maintaining a powerful spirit of resistance instead of hopelessness or despair. Artist like Dälek, Moor Mother, The Knife, Joe Rainey, & Efrim Menuck draw from philosophies of de-colonialism, Marxism, Black Quantum Futurism, & anarchy to illuminate & confront oppressive systems as they really are, inspiring collective resistance, and illuminating new pathways forward.
