Featuring Jessica Moss on violin and Thierry Amar on upright bass
This trio first blew my mind when I saw them open for Sunn O))) a few years ago. On their latest release, heavy, feedback-laden guitars swarm around the throaty singing and impassioned yelps of vocalist/guitarist Robin Wattie. The drums on the album are inconstant and sparse, but in the cathartic moments, they’re slow deliberate, pounding. Seeing as Big Brave is from Montreal, it’s not a surprise that they work with local veterans on their recordings. While their last album was produced by Efrim Menuck, this one was recorded & mixed by Radwan Moumneh (Jerusalem in My Heart) at the mighty Hotel2Tango, where thick, murky, analogue production is a specialty. What really sets this album apart from their last is the more prominent inclusion of chamber instruments during key moments, provided by violinist Jessica Moss and upright bassist Thierry Amar.
