National Health – National Health

National Health was a continuation of Canterbury supergroup Hatfield & the North, bringing over essentially everyone from that project, except Hatfield’s bassist Richard Sinclair (Caravan), including Pip Pyle (Gong), Dave Stewart (Egg), Amanda Parsons, and Phil Miller (Matching Mole). Unsurprisingly, the LP is packed with warm, playful virtuosity. Overdriven bass takes the helm for most of the themes, locked in with propulsive grooves and shifting time signatures of Pyle’s drums. The space fills out quite colorfully with harmonious waves of electric piano, woodwinds and Moog synthesizer. When things need to be taken up a notch, Miller comes in with some triumphantly energizing guitar solos. What really makes this album special though are Amanda Parson’s vocals, which work both as a wordless instrument within the polyphonic arrangements, and as a unifying, lyrical force during the album’s most epic moments.

Moor Mother – The Great Bailout

Sonically, this suite continuously transforms by folding different time-spaces on top of each other. Funereal keyboards and ethereal harp echoes give way to haunting trumpet improvisations over stark trap beats; choral spirituals emerge from gritty bass drones; spectral strings are set against glitchy samples. But this is not just music. This is quantum physics; temporal alchemy; ancestral communion; vibrational magic; spirit channeling. These sounds & words are ultimately an act of liberating history from the colonial clutches of a linear timeline, whose violent inertia charges forward to a hegemonic and apocalyptic horizon.

Los Gigantes Dormidos – En Los Jardines de Mis Abuelos

“he music contains mostly indigenous instruments such as flutes and ceremonial percussion instruments, as well as classical guitar, electric bass, a persian Santoor and one small keyboard. The song texts are improvised prayers in English, Spanish and Nahuatl. Every recording session started with a guided meditation and ultimately turned into a spiritual journey. A psychedelic trip telling of holy lands, the great spirits that inhabit it and a newborn, yet ancient brotherhood.”

Hannah Frances – Keeper of the Shepherd

While the progressive songwriter’s music retains a rootsy essence of folk and Americana, with passionate multi-tracked vocals and thorny knots of electric and acoustic guitars, the’ polyphonic chamber arrangements and shifting time signatures often push things further into prog territory, without ever losing their rustic warmth. The resulting songs are transcendent, haunting and earthy, rising triumphantly from the remaining layers of volcanic ash after a fiery existential catharsis.

(Blouseusa) – Stimulus Overnclusion

Stimulus Overconclusion wastes no time in launching you into an otherwordly space where even familiar textures feel alien and mysterious. Throughout the first side, aquatic percussion loops on tabla or drums are submerged in strange electronic smears and warbly acoustic strings & flutes, suggesting a shapeshifting noise-folk beat tape. The flip side features overcompressed drum blasts, fractured noise rock and sci-fi electronics.

Recommended if you dig Nuke Watch, Fourth World, or This Heat

Esmerine – Dalmak

Whilst in Istanbul for an artist residency, the adventurous Montreal chamber rock group recorded Dalmak with an ensemble of Turkish musicians, augmenting their core sound of cello, marimba, and drums with the saz, darbuka, bendir and several other instruments used in Turkish and Arabic folk music. Epic, modal themes emerge from watery beds of minimalistic polyrhythms and suspenseful string arrangments. While often sombre, mournful or foreboding, the musi seems driven by a collective sense of spiritual determination and hope.
